Reports from Stoke Sentinel are saying that Stoke City want at least £1m for their midfielder Glen Whelan if he is to leave this summer.
Villa recently had a £500,000 bid rejected for Whelan and are yet to go back in and meet Stoke’s asking price.
Stoke recently brought Darren Fletcher and do not want to stand in Whelan’s way but will not let him depart for any less than what they consider is the current market price for a player of his experience and pedigree.
The Irish international captained his side in his 80th appearance for his national team against Austria on Sunday and his current club believe he still has plenty to offer to a pacesetter club in the Championship like Villa.
Whelan only has one year left on his contract and Stoke appreciate the midfielders desire to seek a longer deal somewhere else.
He would be leaving The Potters after a nine and a half seasons and almost 350 appearances. The 33-year-old made 26 starts and four sub appearances last season for Stoke and would provide good competition for Mile Jedinak.
