According to reports from the Birmingham Mail, Sunderland have been handed the green light by Aston Villa to pursue the duo of Tommy Elphick and Ross McCormack.
Aston Villa recently announced their squad for the pre-season tour of Germany and two notable absentees from the list was the duo of Tommy Elphick and Ross McCormack.
Both Elphick and McCormack arrived to Villa Park last summer for big money but with the duo having failed to impress, their futures at the club this summer had been subject to a lot of speculation.
Elphick and McCormack now being left out of the tour of Germany is the biggest indication that the duo do not feature in the plans of manager Steve Bruce for the upcoming Championship campaign and the two experienced players are now expected to leave the Midlands.
Sunderland have been credited with an interest in both Elphick and McCormack, and according to reports from the Birmingham Mail, the Black Cats have seen the exclusion of the duo from the pre-season squad as a green light to pursue the two players in the coming days.
