Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has explained why Jordan Veretout widely expected move to Saint Etienne has collapsed at the last minute.
Jordan Veretout endured a terrible debut campaign at Aston Villa following his arrival to the club in 2015 for £9million but the Frenchman did manage to revive his fortunes last season after joining Saint Etienne on a season long loan deal.
Given his fine performances, Veretout was widely expected to return to Saint Etienne on a permanent basis this summer and a deal of around £5million was already believed to have been agreed between the Ligue 1 side and Villa.
In a dramatic turn of events though, Veretout is now set to join Fiorentina instead for a fee of £6.2million and Villa chief Tony Xia has now explained why Saint Etienne are set to miss out on the 24-year-old.
Through his Twitter handle, Xia has implied that Saint Etienne were looking to sign Veretout on the cheap and as a result, Villa have decided to sell the midfielder to Fiorentina instead.
