St Etienne sporting director Dominique Rocheteau has slammed Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Veretout for turning his back on the French side at the last minute.
Jordan Veretout may have endured a difficult debut campaign with Aston Villa but he managed to revive his career while on loan with Ligue 1 outfit St. Etienne last season and it was widely believed that the French side would be signing the midfielder on a permanent basis this summer.
Various reports claimed that Villa had agreed a fee of around £5million for Veretout and the transfer coming into fruition seemed like nothing more than a formality.
In a stunning turn of events though, the 24-year-old is now said to be looking to back out from his proposed move to St. Etienne following a £6.2million approach from Italian side Fiorentina and the developments have most certainly not please the Ligue 1 side.
Now St Etienne sporting director Dominique Rocheteau has gone on to seemingly confirm that Veretout will not be joining his side and slammed the French midfielder for failing to respect his own promise.
Rocheteau said, “We know him well as a man and a footballer, but frankly we were surprised and disappointed (by his change of heart).
“He did not respect his word. It was even more than his word, since he had given us his agreement. His arrival had all been organised, but then told us he wanted to go to Fiorentina. His choice is a sporting one. Now we’ve discovered that we weren’t his first choice.”
