Aston Villa have challenged the divisive Gabriel Agbonlahor to earn himself a new contract with the club this season.
Gabriel Agbonlahor is clearly a very important player in the history of Aston Villa and with his 75 strikes; the 30-year-old is the club’s all time leading goalscorer in the Premier League.
Despite his fine achievements though, Agbonlahor’s standing among the club faithful fell dramatically after his disciplinary problems during Villa’s woeful Premier League campaign in 2015/16 and it was widely expected that the striker would be set for an unceremonious exit from his boyhood club last summer.
As it turned out though, Agbonlahor stayed put at Villa and even played a key role for the club during the latter stages of the Championship season last term.
Agbonlahor very much looks set to figure in the plans of manager Steve Bruce next season and now club chief executive Keith Wyness has challenged to earn himself an extension to his current contract which expires at the end of the upcoming campaign.
Discussing the striker’s situation, Wyness said, “Gabby is into his last year of a contract for the first time in a while. It’s in his own hands. He did work hard when Steve Bruce came in to get himself fit. He’s been unfortunate with a couple of injuries since then. But he’s got to work for it. For anything to happen it’s down to him. ”
