It can be confirmed that central defender Ciaran Clark has left Aston Villa for Newcastle United.
Ciaran Clark broke into the Aston Villa first team setup back in 2009 and went on to establish himself as a key figure for the club over the next few years, making a total of 159 appearances.
However, Clark struggled for regular minutes on the pitch last season due to poor form as well as injury problems and Villa ultimately suffered an embarrassing relegation into the Championship with just 17 points on the board.
While it had been expected that Clark would look to guide his boyhood club back into the Premier League this season, the defender’s future at Villa Park had been put into major doubt as he had entered the final year of his contract with the club.
It can now be confirmed that Clark has opted against a stay with Villa and has instead joined Newcastle United after the Magpies activated his £5 million release clause.
Upon the completion of the deal, Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez said, “Ciaran is a very versatile player. As a left-footed centre-back, he can also play left-back and as a defensive midfielder.”
